On U.S. Independence Day, Britain is becoming more American

England my last full day of the month, Sir Geoffrey Nice, the former president of the Yugoslav war crimes trial of Slobodan Milosevic international legal team, led by British lawyer who sat in the sun a chat. Against the 300-year old house was a beautiful garden and a tennis court because we were talking about something as serious as genocide.

My family was very young, and the Graduate School, and Nice was one of my most interesting neighbors, 27 years ago, when I lived in that house. At that time, a gentleman, a young lawyer and part-time judge at the Old Bailey is rapidly increasing. We found a street between the houses and talk about the world. The U.S. noted how well I remember a particular conversation. He was the one bit I fatalistic and pessimistic queen was lost many of his fellow subjects.

These many years later, and after he had seen the difference between what is now England asked me. Points out that the food was much better, much more than I ever English and Americans in general seems to have said. Be less of a number of "special relationship" between the two countries with which it was not, I found that the opposite is true.

In terms of popular culture, Britain and the United States completely melted. The English-only "Mad Men" look of the new season is finished, while the Americans, "Downton Abbey" can not wait until next season. The British film industry and American are completely intertwined. Americans Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher Renee Zellweger as Bridget Jones, playing the character of English in a British film audiences will accept. Americans, British thespians many other American films and television programs engulf bring the U.S. role in balancing their accents, is Kate Winslet and Jude Law as the British actor accustomed. Heck, even the new Superman is a Brit.

I walked the main street of Canterbury last week. A gate two street musicians playing jazz is cool. Later, buskers, a bluegrass band Old Crow Medicine Show Cumberland Gap and North Carolina, with its suggestive references to "Wagon Wheel" is conveyors hits. Small rural town in a part of the garden the next day, the band hired to nothing but American melodies. Two weeks ago, a band of American successes of the 1940s and 50 played Friday night in Portsmouth, staying near the Hampshire Hog. And I Guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace during the recent changes, as mentioned in a previous column, the band played a medley of songs by Stevie Wonder.

Tell us more than the music and film - Five Beatles and the Rolling Stones, the mixture at least 60 in the Atlantic is crossed - the London pub scene. Am to 5 pm, at the venerable old houses are not the cloth caps for the workers, but small stock traders and their capitalist on Wall Street hedge fund managers who are playing the same game is filled with. Environment, high-end shops in New Bond Street, the U.S. trade, Houston and Honolulu, located in cities that are the same. Los Angeles and New York Meanwhile, the U.S. Congress, such as Westminster Abbey, Parliament was to discuss. Cuts and health

On each turn, dripping in history, an ancient society, England still have a special place, but more Americans than ever in modern Britain. In particular, the British new generation of the same cultural group, swim comfortably in young Americans. Like it or not, on that day in July 1776, the country declared its independence less and less a part of the old world and the new one is on patrol.
